This is a comfortably proportioned, square shaped lounge with a handsome bar along the rear wall. High windows look out over the corner location where four streets meet. Bar stools next to the window enable drinkers to perch in comfort and watch the world go by. Very relaxing. Oak floors and oak tables with seating for four–eight provide a sense of welcoming reassurance throughout and a truly magnificent mirror occupies much of one wall. The pub is air conditioned for its patrons' comfort.
There is a wide selection of draft lagers such as Kronenberg 1664, Fosters, and Stella plus draft Guinness extra cold and Strongbow cider. Bottled beers abound including Peroni and the ever popular Becks. The selection of some 20 cocktails can be had for around £4.50 and shooters such as B-52 and Brain Haemorrhage for £5. House wine is a very reasonable £10.50 per bottle and there is a good choice of French, Italian, Spanish and New World wines for around £13.50.
The menu is imaginative and provides a range of choice between “Light dishes” for the modest appetite to “Not so light dishes” to meet more substantial needs. The former cost about £5 each and examples are duck and hoisin wrap with crispy parsnips and char grilled sardines with spicy, salsa tomato. The latter, for an average of £6.50 includes hot roast beef sandwich with mini Yorkshires and horseradish sauce, or bangers and mash with a daily change in the choice of sausage. There are also specials such as traditional fish and chips and, as one would expect, a Mexican share platter for the finger eating gregarious drinker.
The Basement Bar, with room for 140 people, is a very popular and intimate location with DJ's on hand on Friday nights. On descending the stair to the Basement Bar be sure to look in the mirror on the wall halfway down. It is said to be an “enhancing mirror” with all who gaze upon it looking nothing short of gorgeous. Thus armed, descend below and enjoy!
